Peter Shankman
Peter Shankman is an unstoppable force of virtual nature. He describes himself as a being ‘a spectacular example of what happens when you merge the power of ADHD with pure creativity and a dose of adventure.’ His revolutionary approaches to the power of virtual media in PR and Marketing set him apart from a sea of ‘virtual marketing experts’ as the absolutely real deal. He’s perhaps best known for founding HARO (Help a Reporter Out) in his NYC apartment and building it into the worlds’ largest portal for journalists seeking sources and sources seeking press.’ If you don’t get HARO yet, you should sign up immediately. It’s free! Peter sold HARO to Vocus in 2010 and sits as a VP continuing to be actively involved in the ongoing operation and expansion of HARO. He’s also a public speaker, author, CEO of The Geek Factory, Inc. (a boutique Social Media, Marketing and PR Strategy Firm) with an international roster of clients, sits on the advisory boards for several companies and in his ‘spare time’ skydives and runs marathons, triathlons and competes in Iron man competitions. Just writing about him is simultaneously exhausting and exhilarating. He took what could have been a huge obstacle and turned it into a recipe for success, which is what I believe is the key to success for most people.
* Peter Shankman, welcome to Craft. You.! I have been a fan for several years and am truly honored you’re carving time out to share your thoughts on doing what you love and loving what you do with our readers.
Thank you!
* I’m a big believer that the key to success is turning the things we perceive as our negative traits into positives. I’m known as The Impatient Crafter™, which stems from my relentless desire to find the creative path of least resistance. You have ADHD and that could have easily become a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. Instead you found a way to make it work for you; in fact you cite it as one of the driving forces of your success. Can you speak to that and talk about your recipe for turning lemons into really tasty strawberry fizzy lemonade?
I never really thought of it that way. I always think about the fact that there are obstacles that get in your way. You can let them stop you, or you can find ways around them. I’m a big fan of finding ways around obstacles.
* I wonder what folks thought when you first came up with the concept for HARO. Did people around you ‘get it’ or were there naysayers and doubters? Can you tell us how you came up with the idea and what it took to get it rolling?
I’d always helped out friends – HARO was a natural extension of that – Was friends with a lot of reporters, who’d call me and ask for ideas. After a while, it seemed logical to just make a list. You always want to have haters and naysayers. That’s how you know you’re doing something right.
